School Project Leads to 10-year-old Student Publishing a Book
10-Year-Old Burnaby Student Releases Children’s Book about Friendship and Kindness
Burnaby, BC – Kiana Sosa, a Burnaby School Student, is proudly holding the children’s book she wrote that was recently published, and now available on Amazon.
Kiana wrote the story at school and was encouraged by her fourth-grade teacher to submit it to the Burnaby District’s Words Writing Project, which publishes the best in student writing each year. Her story, originally called “Two Elephants” was selected as a winner in the category of grades 3-5 prose. Sadly, the special ceremony scheduled to celebrate student authors had to be cancelled this year due to COVID-19.
Then when Ms. Chan, Kiana’s teacher, proposed to her students to work on a Passion Project during the remote learning time, Kiana took the opportunity to work on making her dream of being a published author a reality.
“When you teacher encourages you and your parents support you, it gives you the motivation to accomplish your goals,” expressed Kiana
Now titled “Ellie and Lou and The Meaning of Friendship”, the illustrated children’s book connects children to the values of friendship, kindness, cooperation, and resilience.
The story also touches on the challenges many faces when dealing with hardship and family separation, and shows how any act of kindness, big or small, can make a difference in someone’s life, making the book a tool that parents can use at home to start meaningful conversations.
“I hope to inspire other kids, not only to read and write but also to overcome challenges, to be persistent, to take initiative, and to pursue their dreams,” said Kiana. “I would love to see my book in classrooms, home, school, and public libraries.”
